Elle's Review: Guanabana

Guanabana has seen Kentish town through its latest transformation in style, recently updating its menu to preempt the opening of the Soho House group owned Pizza East, Dirty Burger and The Chicken Shop.

Located between Camden road station and the start of Kentish town high street, it's a wonder that this place has managed to be as successful as it has. This strip of road comprises the kind of shops that are apparently empty inside but constantly have a host of unlikelies hanging around outside. Either drug dens or, well... drug dens. Pangs fish bar and Quins pub are other neighbours to Guanabana and represent the lowest of the lows of Chinese take away and Irish pub in London. In short, Guanabana is truly a diamond in the rough.

The menu comprises of a mix if Carribean and Central American specials, including chicken liver popcorn and pickled cactus fries: two of my favourite Guana treats that come with a warning- having recommended them without reserve I've been gently informed by a friend that they are an acquired taste. Flo doesn't love the liver popcorn either but cactus fries are her staple.

Less acquired tastes can go for an array of gorgeous, sizzling fajitas, jerk chicken, burgers (messy Mexican or Bajan are the best), plantain and other sweetly savoury plates. I'd advise not eating much on a day you're planning on going, as portions are vast. Starters and sides range from £2-£6 and most of the mains are between £7 and £10 (menu)

The "Cheese skirt burger": a gorgeously fatty frou frou

In the summer you can sit out under a viney canopy, oh and it's BYO with very reasonable corkage too so great for a pre-night out feast.
